Reading Brix with a SmartRef refractometer
KeepSpec can read directly from an Anton Paar SmartRef refractometer over Bluetooth, instead of you reading a number off the instrument and retyping it into the app.
How to use it
On the Record check section of a machine’s screen, tap Read from SmartRef next to the Refractive index field. KeepSpec connects to the instrument, takes the reading, and fills in three fields at once:
- Refractive index (nD), as reported by the instrument
- Brix, converted from that reading
- The sample temperature, shown below the field for reference
Bluetooth permission
The first time you use this, the app asks for Bluetooth permission, explaining why: KeepSpec connects to your refractometer to read Brix directly, so readings aren’t transcribed by hand. KeepSpec only uses the connection to take a reading — it doesn’t track your location and isn’t used for anything else.
If the reading fails
If KeepSpec can’t connect or the read fails, you’ll see a plain-language error instead of a crash, and whatever you’d already typed into other fields stays exactly as it was — nothing is lost. You can always type Brix and nD by hand instead, whether the instrument is unavailable or you simply prefer to.
